Mother's Day without Mom

So this is an interesting post to write, because, unlike most posts, this one will be written almost exclusively by John.  And yet, it is a post about Mother's Day.  Are you intrigued yet?  As it so happens, Sarah spent the weekend leading into Mother's Day celebrating her friend Denise's 40th birthday out in Las Vegas.  Meanwhile, back in Lexington, John and the girls did their best to hold down the fort.  And on Mother's Day, John made a very interesting choice.  In honor of Sarah and motherhood, John decided to say yes to all the things he would most likely have frowned upon if all four of us were together.  The logic doesn't quite work, does it?  But for some reason, it made sense to him.  And that is why in the picture to the left, Reese and Callie have their faces painted.  Mother's Day coincided with Mayfest at Gratz Park, and the opportunity presented itself.  So John said, "Sure!  Sarah would say yes."  And then Callie wanted to go on a pony ride.  And John said, "Sure, Sarah would say yes."  And then they both wanted to play in the bouncy house, and they wanted to make a bracelet.  And John said, "Sure! Sarah would say yes."

The best part of Mother's Day was when I told Sarah all about this wonderful plan on the phone, while she was sitting in the St. Louis airport, feeling sad and guilty about not being home on the special day.

And it probably would have been better if John had taken the camera to the fair so he could have captured Callie taking that pony ride, which is still pretty stunning.  I mean, Callie did not hesitate, stepped right up to the beast with a big smile on her face, and rode like she was born in the saddle.  But you have to take my word for it, because there is no visual documentation.  Nice job, Dad. It is also important to note that this was Callie's very first pony ride, and so Sarah does not even have a picture of it.

However, when Sarah did arrive back in town, we made sure that she knew how much she was missed and how much she is loved and appreciated.  The girls made pictures and gifts to show their wonderful mother just how important she is in their lives.  The only thing that unfortunately they could not show was their face paint.  Dad made them take a bath the night before.  Just one more bad decision on his part.
